Can Your Carpet Be Saved from Water Damage?

3/5/2019 (Permalink)

You can save your water damaged carpet depending on how bad the damage is and how long it was left wet. Considering carpeting in homes can be a very pricey expense, saving it is better than having to spend a great amount of money trying to replace it.

To see if your carpet can be saved and renewed, first see what kind of water damaged the carpet. There are three categories of water that we classify individual jobs under according to what kind of water is present at the job.

  • Category 1: Clean water from a broken pipes or a leak from the roof and rainwater gets in, is consider clean water. There is a great possibility of saving the carpet that has been damaged if the carpet has been wet for less than 24-48 hours. If the carpet has been wet longer than that the water may degenerate into the next category which is category 2. We can restore both the padding and the carpet through proper remediation processes.
  • Category 2: Greywater which is considered contaminated water. This type of water can cause sickness if swallowed or have contact with the body. This typical water comes from damages from overflowing washing machines or dishwashers, overflowing toilets is a big cause of water damages, and etc. With this type of water loss, the padding will have to be replaced, but the carpet can be recovered. Category 2 loss requires treatment within 24-48 hours, or it will degenerate into a Category 3 water loss.
  • Category 3: Blackwater is considered highly contaminated with harmful bacteria or other harmful agents. Examples of blackwater water loss includes sewage issues, back flowing toilets, flooding from the sea, rivers, streams, and water that follows from storms like hurricanes. It’s nearly impossible to restore carpet saturated with Category 3 water, even for carpet cleaning professionals.

Do it yourself or Call SERVPRO?

  • Extracting the water yourself has some perks, obviously calling in professionals to do the work is safer and more efficient than trying to do it yourself. A shop vacuum, towels, and ceiling fans do not compare to what products and equipment that professionals use to extract water and remediate damaged carpet. Plus, a professional can observe and assess the entire water damage and mitigate and remediate the entire loss as a whole, and not just the carpet itself.
  • The mitigation process must begin immediately, because the carpet can suffer from permanent damage. After suffering a water damage call a professional service like SERVPRO immediately so our professionals can get to work and so we are able to salvage and prevent further damage to your property.
  • Our goal is to salvage the carpet and help restore it. We want to save our customers from having to replace the padding and carpet because we understand the expenses that follow with purchasing new padding and carpet.
  • After a flooding incident, always call your insurance company. The damage that has been done to your home might be covered by your homeowners insurance, but some flooding losses are not covered by insurance. Make sure to take pictures and videos and file an insurance claim if it can be covered by your insurance.
